Adding a new website to Baidu webmaster toolsThis step-by-step tutorial shows you how to add a new website to Baidu’s webmaster tools
After creating a new Baidu webmaster account in one of our last tutorials, it’s now time to add your website to the Baidu webmaster account. If you’ve ever used Google’s webmaster tools before, this whole process will be very familiar. So let’s get started.
Step 1: Add your domain
After login, click on 工具 (say gong ju – meaning tools) on the top and then 添加站点 (say tian jia zhan dian – meaning add a website).
Next add your website URL with www in the front and click 添加站点 again. Now you’ll get to a page with 3 options on how to verify the ownership of the website.
Step 2a: Verification via document
For this method you need to have access to your server or somehow be able to upload a document to the root folder of your website. The steps as laid out in the Chinese description are:
- First click on 下载验证文件 (say xia zai yan zheng wen jian – meaning download verification document) to download the document
- Then upload the document to the root folder of your website
- By clicking on 点击这里 (say dian ji zhe li – meaning click here) you can test if the upload was successful and the document has been put into the right folder. If correct, you should see a code of around 10 letters and numbers. If not successful, you’ll likely see a 404 error.
- Finally click the blue button saying 完成验证 (say wan cheng yan zheng – meaning finish verification).
This method didn’t work for my websites as I’m using automatic rewrite to https. So if you’re using https or you’re e.g. rewriting www. URLs to URLs without, it might be that you get an error message and you have to go for the CNAME method described in step 2c.
Step 2b: Verification via meta tag
For this method you don’t necessarily have to have access to your server but you just have to be able to add a meta tag to your site’s header area. To do so copy the red marked string and paste it into the header area of your website. Once you’ve done that and you made sure that it appears there, click 完成验证.
Like above, this method didn’t work for me, again because Baidu complained that there’s a 302 header sent back from the server. I would therefore assume that Baidu is trying to access the website via http and not https. If you have similar problems, go for the method below.
Step 2c: Verification via CNAME
For this verification method you need to have access to your domain’s DNS settings. There you have to create a new CNAME record for the red marked subdomain and with zz.baidu.com as target. After you’ve added the record, it might take some time, sometimes up to 3-4 hours for the changes to take effect. As soon as you can call the subdomain via your browser and don’t get an error message, you can click 完成验证 and you should be getting a success message via a dialog popup.
Step 3: Adding subdomains
After successful verification you’re presented with a success message dialog. Simply click on the blue button to close it.
Now you should be able to add any subdomains your website might have. To do so, simply add one subdomain per line and click 添加网站. My website doesn’t have any subdomains, so I simply skip this step.
This tutorial shows the steps you have to run through to add your website to Baidu webmaster tools. Baidu seems to be a lot less flexible when it comes to http and https redirects than Google, so you might have to play around with several of the methods described above to find one that works. Method 2c should work in any case I think. So should one of the first two fail, simply add a CNAME record and everything should be fine.
